Pioneering 3D surgery: New hope for man with half a skull

#3D surgery has brought new hope to a man with ‘half a #skull’ in northwest #China’s Shaanxi Province.

46-year-old Hu fell from his house at the 3rd floor last October and lost his skull on the left.

After the horrific accident, Hu’s life was saved but part of his head became ‘sunken’. His left eyeball was moved from its original place, causing blurred vision. He also lost a majority of his language abilities due to damage to the brain and nervous system.

Apart from the physical impact, Hu has been depressed. “He stays at home watching TV, not willing to go out. I feel sad seeing him this way”, said Hu’s wife.

Xijing Hospital in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi, has offered free 3D surgery to Hu.

A 3D printed #titanium mesh #prosthesis, weighing only 9.9g, has been successfully implanted under his scalp to repair his skull, after a surgery lasting three and a half hours. Hu is now in hospital for observation after the surgery.
