93% of Crimeans Vote to Join Russia, Authorities Say

In a result that surprised few, 93% of voters in Crimea agreed that the peninsula should become a part of Russia, according to exit polls cited by officials.

Crimea, an autonomous republic currently part of the Ukraine, is home to a large ethnic Russian population, and representatives of non-Russian minorities indicated they would boycott the vote.

The ballot asked voters whether Crimea should join the Russian federation or become a more independent entity, though its pro-Kremlin leader, Sergey Aksyonov, has expressed his support for the first option. There was no option that allowed voters to express their support for their current arrangement as part of the Ukraine.

The United States National Security Council denounced the referendum as illegal.

We will not recognize result of poll held under threat of violence & intimidation from Russian military intervention that violates intl law.

The office of the White House Press Secretary also released a message echoing the NSC's view and condemning the vote as unlawful.

"In this century, we are long past the days when the international community will stand quietly by while one country forcibly seizes the territory of another. We call on all members of the international community to continue to condemn such actions, to take concrete steps to impose costs, and to stand together in support of the Ukrainian people and Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty," the statement read. "Russia's actions are dangerous and destabilizing."
